Today's mobile phones have more computing power than NASA had to land on the moon in the 1960s. Screens are now popping up everywhere, intrusive notifications distract us all day long, and our attention spans are getting shorter. Additionally, a ridiculous amount of data is gathered everyday on our routines, preferences, activities, healths, and many other aspects of our personal lives, but is then only sold to companies for marketing purposes, adding more clutter yet no real value to our lives.

Similarly, building an app or a website or any other screen-based product is not necessarily the best technological solution to the problem at hand. Instead, we have to make the devices we already use smarter and more meaningful for people by focusing on real needs and problems. Simply put: less screen clutter and more real value.

In my talk, I will discuss how designers should shift their mindset from catering to devices and directly opting for screen-based solutions, to instead leveraging and employing today’s powerful and ubiquitous technologies to come up with subtle, non-intrusive solutions for real world problems, adding value to people’s lives and suiting each individual’s particular needs and preferences.

It’s time to realize that ‘the future is mobile’ is a passé. It’s time to start thinking beyond the screen.
